My World, My Story Standards Alignment (C3 Framework & California)
My World, My Story is a complete 1st–2nd grade social studies course that introduces young learners to history, geography, community, and civics through stories and hands-on projects. It is intentionally designed to align with both the C3 (College, Career & Civic Life) Framework and the California History–Social Science Standards for Grades 1–2, giving homeschool families and charter schools a clear standards-based foundation.
C3 Framework Alignment (Grades K–2)
Please note: The C3 (College, Career & Civic Life) Framework is written in grade bands (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12), and each state decides how specific indicators fit into individual elementary grades.
My World, My Story is built around the K–2 band and is designed so that 1st–2nd grade students meaningfully experience all of the key early social studies expectations in the C3 Framework at an age-appropriate level.
What C3 Areas Does This Course Cover?
Across the 6 units (All About Me & My Family, Geography & Maps, Rules & Citizenship, Famous Americans, Economics, and Celebrations & Cultural Traditions), students practice:
- Inquiry Skills (Dimensions 1 & 4) – Asking and answering questions, gathering information from stories, interviews, and simple texts, and sharing what they’ve learned through drawings, timelines, journals, and projects.
- History (D2.His, K–2) – Understanding past, present, and future; exploring personal and family history; reading timelines; and learning about important people in U.S. history such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King Jr.
- Geography (D2.Geo, K–2) – Using maps, globes, symbols, and map keys; locating where they live from home to world; identifying landforms and bodies of water; and recognizing that places have both physical and human features.
- Civics (D2.Civ, K–2) – Learning why communities have rules and laws, exploring community helpers, practicing simple civic vocabulary (citizen, election, president, laws), and thinking about how they can help their families and communities.
- Economics & Everyday Life (D2.Eco, K–2) – Distinguishing needs and wants, learning about jobs and work, and making simple connections between choices, money, and resources.
- Culture & Identity – Recognizing family traditions, celebrations, and cultural practices; comparing “then and now”; and appreciating how diverse people and communities contribute to our shared story.

California History–Social Science Standards Alignment (Grades 1–2)
Although My World, My Story is written to be flexible for families across the United States, it aligns very closely with the California History–Social Science Standards for 1st and 2nd grade. Each unit in the teacher guide lists the specific standards it addresses so that charters and families can easily document coverage.
At a high level, the six units work together to cover all of the California’s Grade 1 (1.1–1.4) and Grade 2 (2.1–2.5) social studies standards through literature-rich lessons and hands-on activities.
Grade 1 Alignment (California)
In California, first grade focuses on families, school, and the basics of community and national identity. Throughout the course, students:
-
1.1 – Personal & Family History
Unit 1 (“All About Me, My Family, and My Past”) includes personal and daily timelines, family trees, family history interviews, and family traditions projects, helping children understand past, present, and future in the context of their own lives and families. -
1.2 – Geographic Tools & Spatial Thinking
Unit 2 (“Geography, Maps, and Where We Live”) introduces maps and globes, the “Me on the Map” sequence (home–city–state–country–world), the compass rose, cardinal directions, and basic landforms and bodies of water. -
1.3 – Rules, Leadership, and Citizenship
Unit 3 (“Rules, Community, and Citizenship”) teaches why communities have rules and laws, explores real problems and laws, introduces leaders (such as the president), and highlights the roles of community helpers. -
1.4 – National Symbols and American Heroes
Unit 4 (“Famous Americans and People Who Made a Difference”) covers American symbols (flag, Liberty Bell, bald eagle) and key figures such as George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Sacagawea, Neil Armstrong, and others through short biographies, crafts, and games.
Grade 2 Alignment (California)
Second grade standards shift from the student’s immediate family to communities, geography, and people who made a difference. My World, My Story supports this by deepening the work begun in Grade 1:
-
2.1 – People Who Lived in the Past
Units 1 and 4 introduce life in earlier times through family history, timelines of the United States, and age-appropriate biographies of important Americans, encouraging students to compare “long ago” with life today. -
2.2 – Geography and Places
Unit 2 extends map skills, landform study, and spatial reasoning as students read and create maps, design a park with a map key and compass rose, and identify different physical features (mountains, plains, rivers, islands, deserts, oceans, etc.). -
2.4 – Government and Civics
Unit 3 explores basic government ideas (Constitution, laws, president, branches of government at a simplified level), voting and elections, and how problems in communities can lead to new laws that promote safety and fairness. -
2.5 – People Who Made a Difference
Unit 4 focuses on individuals who contributed significantly to American history and life—presidents, civil rights leaders, explorers, scientists, and more—using timelines, mini-biographies, drawing activities, and games to help students see how one person’s choices can impact others.
