Help your students understand where they live and how their “place” fits into the bigger world with this Me on the Map Project!

This hands-on activity introduces kids to maps, location, and geography in a fun, personal way. Students will cut, color, and assemble a simple flipbook to show their street, city, state, country, continent, and world. They’ll also practice writing (or tracing) their address and labeling each part of their community.

Perfect for Kindergarten, 1st grade, or 2nd grade social studies, this activity makes abstract map concepts concrete and meaningful by starting with something every child knows—their own home.

 What’s Included:

  • Kid-friendly reading passage: What Are Maps and Why Are They Important?
  • Printable “Me on the Map” flipbook (street → city → state → country → continent → world)
  • Step-by-step teacher/parent instructions
  • Coloring and tracing options for differentiated learning
  • Teacher tip to help students visualize how their place grows bigger with each step

📚 Standards Alignment:

  • Kindergarten: K.4 – Compare and contrast locations of people, places, and environments
  • 1st Grade: 1.2 – Compare and contrast the absolute and relative locations of people and places; 1.4 – Learn about different backgrounds of people in their community
  • 2nd Grade: 2.2 – Demonstrate map skills by describing absolute and relative locations of people, places, and environments

This project is great for back-to-school, All About Me activities, community studies, or geography units. It’s perfect for homeschoolers, classroom teachers, and parents looking to make learning about maps fun and personal!
