Early American History Standards Alignment (C3 Framework & California)

Our Early American History course is designed for approximately grades 3–5 and is intentionally built to align with both the C3 (College, Career & Civic Life) Framework and the California History–Social Science Standards. This page explains how the course fits into common national expectations for social studies and what that means for homeschool families and charter schools.

C3 Framework Alignment (Grades 3–5)

Please note: The C3 (College, Career & Civic Life) Framework is designed in grade bands (K–2, 3–5, 6–8, 9–12), so individual states decide which specific indicators fit best in each elementary grade.

The list and chart we use are based on the most common and developmentally appropriate assignments of C3 indicators for Grades 3–5, drawn from national implementation patterns. Our Early American History course is designed so that students will work with all of the C3 Framework standards for grades 3–5 in a meaningful, age-appropriate way.

What C3 Areas Does This Course Cover?

Across the 8 units (from Native Peoples of North America through Civil War & Reconstruction), students practice:

  • Inquiry Skills – Asking compelling questions, using evidence, and communicating conclusions (C3 Dimensions 1 & 4).
  • History – Comparing life across time, understanding causes and effects of major events, analyzing multiple perspectives, and recognizing turning points in U.S. history (D2.His indicators for grades 3–5).
  • Geography – Using maps and spatial tools, describing physical and cultural regions, and understanding how people interact with their environment (D2.Geo indicators for grades 3–5).
  • Civics – Exploring roles and responsibilities, the origins of American government, and how people work together to bring about change (D2.Civ indicators for grades 3–5).
  • Economics (light integration) – Considering how economic decisions affect people and historical events, such as exploration, colonization, and westward expansion (D2.Eco indicators for grades 3–5).

California History–Social Science Standards Alignment (Grades 3–5)

Although Early American History is written as a nationally flexible U.S. history course, it aligns very strongly with the California History–Social Science Standards, especially in Grade 3 and Grade 5.

Grade 3 Alignment (California)

In California, third grade focuses on communities, geography, and the people who shape them. Throughout the course, students:

  • Explore geography and regions of North America (supports CA 3.1 & 3.2).
  • Learn about Native Peoples of North America and how they adapted to different environments (supports CA 3.2).
  • See how communities and cultures develop and contribute to the broader story of the United States (supports CA 3.3 & 3.5).
  • Practice basic civic ideas like rules, leadership, and working together (supports CA 3.4).

In short, the course fully supports the major themes of Grade 3 social studies through rich stories, maps, projects, and discussions. Not only does it cover 100% of the third-grade standards, it challenges students to learn Early American history while doing it.

Grade 5 Alignment (California)

California’s fifth grade focuses on U.S. history from early Native cultures through the formation and growth of the nation. That is exactly the scope of this course. Across the 8 units, students cover:

  • 5.1–5.2: Indigenous peoples of North America and early European exploration.
  • 5.3–5.4: Colonial America and life in the colonies.
  • 5.5–5.7: Road to Revolution, the American Revolution, and Forming a New Nation (Constitution and early government).
  • 5.8–5.9: The New Republic, westward expansion, and the growing nation.
  • 5.10: Civil War and Reconstruction (causes, key figures, and lasting impact).

Our Early American History course is designed to cover the full arc of California’s Grade 5 U.S. History standards (5.1–5.10) in a literature-rich, hands-on format.

Where Does Grade 4 Fit In?

In California, Grade 4 social studies typically focuses on California history (missions, the Gold Rush, and statehood). Early American History is not a California history course, but it does overlap naturally. For our 4th grade California History course click here.
