The Butterfly Project was started by the Holocaust Museum in Houston in 2001. It is a global initiative to remember the 1.5 million Jewish children who were murdered during the Holocaust in World War 2 (WW2). The Butterfly Project is based on the poem “The Butterfly” by Pavel Friedmann who was killed at Auschwitz.
Students will read the poem by Friedmann and then decorate a butterfly using the template provided. The butterfly can be attached to a clothespin with the rectangle strip provided and some glue to make the wings flap. See example.
Also included is a "What is the Holocaust?" synopsis geared toward younger children (Ages 9-12 yrs old) that simply explains this horrific time in history. It is not necessary to include the synopsis in this project but may be helpful.
As a reminder, January 27th is Holocaust Remembrance Day. This is the day Auschwitz, one of the largest concentration camps, was liberated.
Can be used in a classroom or for homeschool.
