California and the Bear Flag Republic – How It Became a State! (For Kids!)
Have you ever seen California’s state flag with the big brown bear on it? That bear has a wild story behind it—one that includes a mini-republic, a homemade flag, and California becoming the 31st state in the United States!
Let’s travel back in time and learn how California went from Mexican land to part of the U.S., with a stop in something called the Bear Flag Republic along the way.
🐻 What Was the Bear Flag Republic?
Back in 1846, California wasn’t part of the United States yet—it was still controlled by Mexico. But many American settlers were already living here, and they wanted California to become part of the U.S.
So, in June 1846, a small group of these settlers decided to take over the town of Sonoma in Northern California. They raised a flag with a grizzly bear, a red star, and the words “California Republic”.
This short-lived takeover became known as the Bear Flag Revolt, and for a few weeks, they declared themselves the Bear Flag Republic!
🧍 Who Was Involved?
- American settlers in California who wanted independence from Mexico
- John C. Frémont, an explorer and U.S. Army officer who helped support the settlers
- Mexican leaders, who were trying to keep control of the land
- Native Americans, who were caught in the middle and affected by both sides
🕰️ How Long Did the Bear Flag Republic Last?
Only about one month!
That’s right—just a few weeks after the settlers raised their bear flag, the United States Army arrived and took control of California during the Mexican-American War. They replaced the bear flag with the American flag, and California became U.S. territory.
But that bear flag? It made a big impression—and became part of the California state flag we use today!
Becoming a State
After the U.S. took control of California in 1846, many changes happened:
- In 1848, gold was discovered at Sutter’s Mill, starting the California Gold Rush. Thousands of people came to California from all over the world! 💰⛏️
- With so many people living here, California needed a government and rules.
- On September 9, 1850, California officially became the 31st state of the United States!
It happened quickly because California was growing fast and was too big and important to ignore.
